Yom Kippur Thought To Light By [Oct 7 2011]

Although Yom Kippur is aptly called the Day of Atonement and Judgment, don't let that heavy tone get you down. View Yom Kippur as an opportunity to enter the New Year with a clean slate and refresh your relationship with the Divine. It's interesting that the fast is followed by a festive meal—we are confident that our appeals were accepted, so we rejoice. After all, there is nothing more empowering and worth celebrating than the ability to begin anew. May we all be sealed in the Book of Life!

This evening sanctify the holiness of this time by lighting
a candle with the the special Shabbat/Yom Kippur blessings:

Transliteration of the first blessing:

ki-deshanu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzvi-va-nu le-had-lik ner shel
Sha-bat vi-shel Yom Ha-Ki-pu-rim.

Translation:
Blessed are You, L‑rd, our G‑d, King of the
universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and
has commanded us to kindle the light of Shabbat and Yom
Kippur.

Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-o-lam
she-he-che-ya-nu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-hi-gi-ya-nu liz-man

Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the universe,
who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to
reach this occasion.
